Getting to know Antanien Slomba

Welcome! I know it can be difficult to make the decision to start therapy. Congratulations on taking the first step! I am an inclusive, culturally competent, Buddhist practitioner with more than 25 years of experience as a therapist, life coach, and educator.

The human experience is full of happiness, hardships, and challenges. At times, it is difficult to see clearly enough to step in the direction of your hopes and dreams. Symptoms of anxiety, depression, relationship conflict or a challenging life transition, can leave one feeling overwhelmed and lost. Our life journey can be difficult to face alone. Working alongside a therapist can empower healing, change, and growth toward your goals. I believe your inner wisdom, and individual strengths, can cultivate the authentic self and enhance the experiences of love, play, and career.

As a Certified Dialectical Behavior Therapist, I specialize in modalities incorporating self-awareness and spiritual awakening to support the human experience. I utilize a multitude of therapeutic techniques to assist you in your journey; existential therapy, mindfulness techniques, feminist therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, schema therapies, exposure therapy, attachment based techniques and emotionally focused therapy.

I am also very passionate about helping those who have experienced disparities in care linked to discriminatory social structures, such as women, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+ communities. Many people have navigated life negotiations between authenticity, connection, safety and health due to such structures. I would be happy to discuss my findings and share my wisdom in navigating such challenges.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My clients experience an inviting platform where every single part of you is welcome, even the parts that are uncomfortable to share. As a therapist, I am here to provide you a judgement-free, safe, comfortable space that encourages enlightenment and introspection.

I have a direct and respectful style that will validate, support, and challenge behavioral systems as well as guide the client in the development of coping skills. Together, we will begin to discover ways that will benefit your personal growth and empower your inner wisdom. As the authentic self is realized your life will flow easily and inner peace will be abundant.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The therapeutic process begins with you. The first few visits will be spent getting to know one another. I am here to listen, and support YOUR journey. I am here to walk, run or jump with you through whatever changes you seek. My goal is to empower you to navigate the world.

I utilize a compassionate, person-centered approach to build a therapeutic alliance that will support and promote the opportunities needed to share and explore private, emotionally charged, existential experiences.

Exercises and homework will be assigned to support transformation. This will be an imperative part of you developing a self directed care plan that will support you well after therapy has concluded.

The privilege to help thousands of clients over the years has provided me with a diverse and comprehensive knowledge to refer to in supporting your needs. I am consistently successful in increasing personal clarity while stabilizing symptoms within an average of 3-6 months for those with depression, anxiety, trauma, and couples / relationship conflict, identity conflict, racial trauma and self esteem issues.

Processing-based therapies:

Processing-based therapies work by challenging you to change yourself.  They often do this by using values work, asking you to reach for an aspirational version of yourself, or exposing you to stressors to grow your resilience to them.  These types of therapy can take longer to work but generally aim to help people change the paradigm with which they see their lives.  This has a lot of downstream benefits.  Many of these therapies are built on the principles of Zen or Stoicism, and they generally help people by making them strong enough to meet their circumstances and focus on helping people to grow within rather than manage the external world.  Processing-based therapies like REBT, CBT, Logotherapy, and ACT are wonderful for achieving these kinds of goals.  However, they can become maladaptive when someone is unwilling to change themselves, or changing themselves is too scary to approach, which can prompt a lot of wasted time and opportunity when the client could be developing in other ways.

How does it work?

01

We meet for an hour to discuss what’s bringing you in and how I can help. We’ll outline a plan of action and schedule around implementing it. There is a free consultation before this if you’re unsure if this is the right fit for you.

02
Therapy

After the evaluation, we’ll decide how frequently to meet and work through a treatment plan that we make together to address the goals you have for treatment.

03
Maintenance

After achieving your goals with therapy, sessions may end or they can enter a maintenance form for touching base and more subtle course corrections if desired (usually conducted much less frequently)

04
Location

Currently, all of our appointments are being offered remotely via video calls.

Reviews!

I've been seeing Antanien for a year now, which is the longest I've seen any one therapist at a time, and is a testament to the quality of her care in itself. I've made so much progress since this time last year, and I appreciate that the practice allowed me to do a brief consultation with Antanien before starting sessions with her. She's compassionate, knowledgable, great at sharing information and resources, and I always feel like our sessions are cumulative and building on top of each other vs feeling like one-off conversations. I also really like that she includes scientific information about the brain and nervous system which I have found quite profound. Highly recommend Antanien.

Antanien is an extremely thoughtful therapist that will challenge you to be your best self by actively giving you tools to implement. I love the "homework" and don't feel like I'm venting but rather actively problem solving. She's the perfect balance of being encouraging/supportive/understanding and at the same will challenge you. I have seen immense progress (decrease in anxiety, and increase in confidence). I look forward to continuing our work together.
I've been seeing Antanien for a few months and find our sessions helpful, constructive, supportive, and encouraging. She provides tangible exercises, scientific context as relevant (which I find interesting and useful), and has helped me connect dots and develop a deeper understanding of myself. She's helped me expand my vocabulary around what I feel and how I respond to things. She helps me course correct and guides me towards showing myself compassion and grace. I'm looking forward to digging deeper with her in our upcoming sessions.
